Barb Goodwin -
Barb has flown in the air race several times. She writes about herself -
I'm a member of the Michigan Chapter 99s and have been flying since 1984. In 1988 and 1990 I flew as co pilot for a great pilot/racer, Mary Creason who lives in Grand Haven, Mi. We flew her Grumman Tiger and did quite well in both races. In 1992 I earned my CFI license but didn't start teaching flying until 1999 as I was a full time classroom teacher for 5th/6th grade science and math until I retired in 1999. My husband and I flew commercially to Arlington, WA. in Oct. 1999 and bought a great little training plane that we flew home to MI. Since then I've been instructing in my Cherokee 140 and in other student's planes and love it.
In 2002 I entered the ARC with my Cherokee and a co-pilot who had been my student the previous year. We had a great time, headwinds all the way to the East coast that race, not good in a slow airplane. I raced with her again in 2003 and loved celebrating the 100 year celebrations for the Wright Brothers at our terminus. In 2004 I raced with my CFI instructor who now works for Nasa Ames in CA. and in 2005 my co pilot was a recent graduate of Purdue University. She was such an excellent pilot that we switched jobs and I navigated while she flew most of the legs. I flew as co-pilot with Carolyn Van Newkirk in the 2009 ARC.
My husband, Bob, is a pilot and we have been married for fifty-three years. We have three grown children, one living in Seattle, one in Orlando, and one in Denver. We have one granddaughter, and three grandsons. |
